November 22, 2016 | Women's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – Junior Leslie Robinson had a sparkling performance with a career-high 19 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, but it was not enough as the Delaware Blue Hens walked away with a 66-62 victory at the Bob Carpenter Center on Tuesday evening.
Robinson also added four assists, matching her personal best. Making her first start of the season, senior Vanessa Smith secured a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Bella Alarie blocked three shots in the loss.
The Princeton offense got started quickly making six of its first eight shots, to jump out to a 15-6 lead. During that span, Robinson made 4-of-5 while Alarie deposited a three-pointer. Delaware made its way back, ending the quarter on a 13-4 run, giving Princeton a 19-18 advantage after the first quarter.
The home team kept pushing as the first bucket of the second frame gave it the lead. The Tigers then proceeded to go on a 9-2 spurt highlighted by five more points from Robinson, reestablishing a 28-23 command. Delaware wouldn't go away as it tied the contest again at 28-all, before a long-range trey by Alarie put the Tigers back on top.
Princeton would take a 33-32 lead at the intermission. Head coach Courtney Banghart's team shot 46.7 percent in the first half, its best mark of the young season.
As the second half marched on, the Blue Hens registered 10 of 14 points, advancing its lead to three (42-39) with 4:30 to go in the third quarter. In her first extended play of the season, sophomore Gabrielle Rush kept the Tigers within striking distance (48-47) after 30 minutes of game play with an eight-point frame.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Delaware stretched its lead to seven as the final quarter opened up. Trailing by as many as nine, Princeton crawled back as Robinson grabbed an offensive board and laid it in to set the score at 60-58 with 1:49 remaining.
Delaware answered on the other end with a basket by Erika Brown, but on the next possession, junior Kenya Holland dropped in a three from the left wing to get Princeton within one as the clock stood at 1:09. Delaware was perfect from the charity stripe, sinking all four attempts in the final minute to wrap up the victory.
In-state rival Rutgers heads to Jadwin Gym on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. The Girl Scout Day game will be featured on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3.
