• For the fourth time in program history, the Tigers will make their way to the Hawaiian Islands, this time for the Pearl Harbor Invitational. Princeton has previously played in Hawaii in the 1979 Rainbow Classic, the 1998 Rainbow Classic, which Princeton won by taking games against Florida State, Texas and UNC Charlotte, and the 2007 Maui Invitational.
• Despite Princeton having made three prior trips to Hawaii, the Tigers have never faced the Rainbow Warriors. Princeton has faced Cal five times before, winning in 1971 at Kentucky before an NCAA Tournament first-round loss at Wake Forest in 1997 and losses at Berkeley in 2001, 2009 and 2014. Mitch Henderson has been a part of two of the last four meetings with the Golden Bears, as a player in 1997 and as a coach in 2014.
• Fox Sports 1 play-by-play man Gus Johnson was on the call for one of the great moments in Princeton men's basketball history, when the Tigers upset defending national champion UCLA in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Johnson had the TV call along with Quinn Buckner.
• Princeton will have traveled nearly 15,000 (approx. 14,801) miles before playing its second home game and first against a Division I opponent, Dec. 14 against Saint Joseph's. The log includes a trip to BYU, local trips to Lehigh and Lafayette, heading down to VCU, to Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor Invitational, and to Liberty for next Saturday's game before the Hawks come to Jadwin.
• Up Next: Princeton will head to Liberty for a 2 p.m. game Saturday, Dec. 10. The Tigers and Flames have played in each of the last three seasons, with Princeton winning all three times. Two of those wins came by five (last year) and six (2013-14) points. It'll be the Tigers' second trip to the Vines Center, with Princeton playing there in the series opener on Jan. 4, 2014, before Liberty came to Princeton each of the last two seasons. Liberty is 4-4 heading into Tuesday's visit from Furman. The Flames and Tigers have one common opponent, VCU, which beat the Flames by five in Lynchburg and the Tigers by 11 in Richmond.
• On Cal: The Bears have shot .454 from the field over the last four games, boosting their season average to .427. Cal is holding opponents to a .280 clip from 3-point range, with the Bears' foes averaging 6 of 20 from beyond the arc; Princeton averages 10 of 26, and no Cal opponent this year has taken more than 23 3s since South Dakota State hoisted 30 in the season opener.  Through Friday's games, Cal's top national ranking was eighth in both rebounding margin (then +11.5 rpg, now +11.3) and defensive rebounds per game (then 31.83, now 31.57).Â
• On Hawai'i: The Rainbow Warriors will have the longest rest of any of the four teams entering the Pearl Harbor Invitational, having played last Monday, Nov. 28. Princeton last played the next day at VCU, Seton Hall last played Thursday against Columbia, and Cal last played Saturday against Alcorn State. The team has shot better than .400 from the field in every game but one entering the PHI, shooting .357 against Troy on Nov. 25. Hawai'i's opponents (.359) have averaged 7 of 18 from beyond the arc this season. Hawai'i's top national ranking through Friday's games was 19th in fewest personal fouls per game at 16.0.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 36-32 (.529) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 62-24 (.721) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Cal is Princeton's highest remaining opponent by KenPom ranking, at 53 after its win Saturday over Alcorn State. VCU is the highest, at 42, followed by Cal, BYU at 58 and Monmouth at 78 among teams in the top 100. Princeton checked in 50th and had the 11th-toughest schedule in the nation to this point.Â
•The Bears have four players 6-10 or taller in Marcus Lee (6-10), Ivan Rabb (6-11), Kingsley Okoroh (7-0) and Kameron Rooks (7-1). Rabb averages 19.8 points per game, the only player averaging better than seven points a game in that group. Princeton's only starter taller than 6-5 this season has been Hans Brase at 6-9. Ido Flaisher (6-10) is the only Hawai'i player taller than 6-8, and while he has played in all seven of the team's games, no Hawai'i starter has been taller than 6-8 Jack Purchase and Gibson Johnson.Â
• ESPN's latest bracketology was unveiled Thursday, Dec. 1, and the Tigers were a projected 13th seed in the West in Sacramento against UCLA with the winner meeting Purdue, Clemson or TCU. Among Princeton opponents this season, Monmouth is a 13th seed in the East, Cal is an 11th seed in the East, VCU is an eighth seed in the West, and Lehigh is a 14th seed in the Midwest.
• Cal was the fourth pick in the Pac-12 preseason media poll behind Oregon, Arizona and UCLA, and Hawai'i was picked eighth by the media in the nine-team Big West. The Tigers were the top pick in the Ivy League.Â
• Princeton figures to see a familiar face against Cal. Grant Mullins, a graduate transfer from Columbia, played five games against the Tigers, averaging 9.4 points, four rebounds and two assists per game in 30.4 minutes a contest. His first game against Princeton last season was his best, as he went 6 of 13 from the field, 2 of 5 from 3, 5 of 6 from the stripe for 19 points while netting a double-double with 12 rebounds. Still, the Tigers won four of those five games.
• The 1,000-point watch is on for the Tigers as four players could surpass the 1K mark by repeating their previous season totals. Spencer Weisz is the active career leader at 973, followed by Hans Brase at 863, Steven Cook at 806 and Henry Caruso at 667.
• Princeton coach Mitch Henderson, the sixth-winningest coach in program history and the longest-tenured coach since Pete Carril retired in 1996, is closing in on 100 wins, having notched his 98th Friday against Rowan. Henderson is 18 wins away from becoming Princeton's third-winningest coach outright. He trails Frederick Leuhring (100, 1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff (103, 1962-67), Albert Wittmer (115, 1923-32), Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (250, 1938-43 & 1946-61) and Pete Carril (514, 1967-96).Â
• Entering Saturday's games, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring defense (68.0 ppg), scoring margin (+9.8 ppg), 3FG percentage defense (.292), rebounding defense (33.8 rpg), turnover margin (+2.0/gm), defensive rebound percentage (.783) and 3s per game (9.6). Princeton's top national statistical ranking was in fewest fouls (12th, 93). Individually, Devin Cannady was 36th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage at .481.Â
• Princeton's 3-point field goal percentage has increased each game this season, from .286 at BYU to .333 at Lehigh, .379 at Lafayette, .419 against Rowan and .471 at VCU. While the improvement hasn't been quite as linear, Princeton began the season shooting .375 from the field at BYU and has shot .500 or better from the field in each of the last three games.Â
• Princeton returns 99 percent of its points and minutes from last year, a group that includes its top 13 scorers from last year and three 2016 All-Ivy League honorees in Henry Caruso (first team), Spencer Weisz (second team) and Steven Cook (honorable mention).Â
• As can be expected from a team returning so much, all five of Princeton's starters over the first five games were juniors or seniors, and two of Princeton's four-man rookie class has seen playing time. Will Gladson and Jose Morales each came off the bench to make their debuts during the BYU game, and Gladson scored his first career points (eight), including two 3-pointers, at Lafayette on Nov. 23.
• Princeton has three players who have earned All-Ivy League honors during their careers: Spencer Weisz was the 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and 2015 and 2016 second-team All-Ivy. Steven Cook was 2015 second-team All-Ivy and 2016 honorable mention All-Ivy. Henry Caruso was 2016 first-team All-Ivy.
• Princeton was in the top 10 percent of the nation (top 34) in five statistical categories last season: third in fewest fouls (503), sixth in fewest turnovers (331), 14th in 3s per game (9.7), 21st in scoring margin (+10.5 ppg) and 31st in 3FG percentage (.383).
• Princeton led the Ivy League last year in scoring offense (79.1 ppg, 39th nationally) in fewest turnovers, fewest fouls, defensive rebounds per game (26.93), fewest personal fouls per game (17.3) and 3s per game.
• Princeton's 79.1 ppg last season was the third-highest in program history and highest since the 1971-72 season, a program-record 79.69 points per game. The 1964-65 Final Four team averaged 79.69 ppg.Â
• Princeton is coming off its quadrennial foreign trip. The Tigers went to Italy in late August, spending two nights each in Rome, Florence, Bologna with a side trip to Venice, Vicenza and Cernobbio on Lake Como. Princeton played three games, starting by closing a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Fortitudo Kontatto in Bologna, a second-division Italian team, 93-87 in overtime. Khyan Rayner hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater to send the game to OT. Next, Princeton faced ASD Pallacanestro Vicenza, winning that game 67-58 against a third-division Italian team. The Tigers closed the trip with an 84-80 OT loss to Junior Casale, another second-division Italian team. Princeton had 15 players on the trip, not including the freshmen, and 13, except Hans Brase and Elias Berbari, saw playing time. Among the Tigers on the Italy trip was Devin Cannady, who had also studied in Tanzania earlier in the summer.
• The Ivy League has won five NCAA Tournament games in the last seven seasons. Cornell advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2010, Harvard beat New Mexico in 2013 and Cincinnati in 2014, and Yale beat Baylor in 2016. Princeton came within a buzzer-beating bank shot of adding to that in 2011, but Kentucky's Brandon Knight saved a 57-55 win, and Harvard fell to UNC just 67-65 in 2015.
• The Pete Carril coaching tree is going strong in the 2016-17 season. Seven current Division I coaches played for and/or coached under Carril, including Mitch Henderson '98, Mike Brennan '94 (American), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Brian Earl '99 (Cornell) and Bill Carmody (Holy Cross).Â
• #IVYMADNESS: The inaugural Ivy League men's and women's basketball tournaments will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12, 2017, at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The top four teams will earn berths in the tournament, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championships on Sunday. All six games will be broadcast live on ESPN's networks. The winner of the regular season will be the Ivy League champion, and the tournament winner will receive the automatic NCAA tournament bid with the regular-season champion, if different, earning an NIT bid. The site past 2017 has not been determined.
