December 29, 2016 | Women's Basketball
ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets used a strong defensive effort to take down the Princeton Tigers, 67-51, at the McCamish Pavilion on Thursday evening.
Junior Leslie Robinson led the Tigers with 12 points. Freshman Bella Alarie had eight points and eight rebounds while sophomore Gabrielle Rush sank three three-pointers off the bench in the loss.
The Tigers came out scorching, making their first four shots, but three treys kept the Yellow Jackets in front. Georgia Tech kept Princeton at bay for the final seven minutes of the frame as it took a 16-8 advantage after the first quarter.
Rush's long distance bucket got the Tigers within six (17-11) as the clock ticked near eight and half minutes to go in the first half. The home squad quickly pushed its lead back to double-digits (21-11) on consecutive baskets by Zaire O'Neill. Another three-pointer by Rush again cut Princeton's deficit to six, but a 10-2 spurt by Georgia Tech, highlighted by five points from Imani Tilford, set the score at 35-21 at the intermission.
Princeton made an early push to open the second half, recording the first five points, but Elo Edeferioka dropped in the next eight points for Georgia Tech, extending its lead to 17 (45-28).
In the fourth quarter, head coach Courtney Banghart's team turned up the defense as it held the Yellow Jackets to one basket over the first six minutes of the frame. The Tigers couldn't muster the offensive firepower to get back into the contest, only getting as close as 13 during that stretch.
Edeferioka posted a game-high 17 points along with 10 rebounds and three blocks. O'Neill (13 points) and Antonia Peresson (12 points) had double figures. Charin Scott converted eight points and 10 boards in the win. Georgia Tech scored 20 points off of 18 Princeton turnovers and had 42 points in the paint.
Princeton fell to 5-7 on the season while Georgia Tech improved to 11-2. The Tigers will wrap up non-conference play at Lipscomb on Saturday (Dec. 31). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
