NEW YORK – The Princeton women's basketball team (20-4, 9-1 Ivy) used a 21-5 scoring spree in the third quarter to take down the Columbia Lions (12-14, 1-10 Ivy), 77-48 at Levien Gymnasium on Friday evening.
Senior Michelle Miller led the Tigers with 18 points, making seven of her 11 shots (63.6 percent). Senior Amanda Berntsen scored 10 points and tied her career high with nine rebounds. Three other Tigers, seniors Alex Wheatley, Taylor Williams and junior Vanessa Smith, also had double figures for the road team in the win.
The Tigers started off quickly, going 5-of-7 to begin the Ivy League matchup (75 percent), scoring 11 of 13 points. Eight of those points came in the paint. Back-to-back three-pointers from Miller and Berntsen stretched the visitors' advantage to 12 before Princeton took a 24-14 lead after one quarter.
After Columbia got within seven, Princeton scored the final six points of the first half to take a 41-28 advantage into the intermission. Miller (nine points) and Wheatley (eight points) were a combined 8-of-11 (72.8 percent) to lead the Tigers in the first 20 minutes of game action.
Similar to the last time these teams met earlier this season, Princeton held Columbia to one basket in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions, 21-5 to extend a 13-point lead to 29 after 30 minutes of play.
With the University of Pennsylvania's loss to Cornell tonight, the Tigers and Quakers now share the top record in the Ivy League.
Game Notes:
- The class of 2016 became the fourth group in program history to win 20 games all four years. Head coach Courtney Banghart's team has registered at least 20 wins in each of the last seven seasons.
- This marks the second game in a row in which the Tigers had at least five players in double figures.
- In second half, Columbia shot 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) and were outscored by Princeton, 36-20.
- Tonight was the third consecutive game that the Tigers shot over 50 percent from the field (53.7 percent). It was also the seventh straight game that Princeton scored at least 70 points.
- Michelle Miller, in her last four games, is 26-of-45 (56.5 percent) shooting along with 10 of 16 (62.5 percent) from long range.
