ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton women's basketball team (21-4, 10-1 Ivy) used a 53-24 run to take down the Cornell Big Red (14-12, 6-6 Ivy), 94-57 at Newman Arena on Saturday evening.
Senior Alex Wheatley set a new career high with 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting (78.6 percent). Senior Annie Tarakchian recorded her 18th career double-double, dropping 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Vanessa Smith added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win.
Wheatley's eight points in the first quarter helped the Tigers to a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of game action. 11 of the team's 15 points were in the paint. After the Big Red took a 7-6 lead at the 7:03 mark, the Tigers ended the quarter on 9-4 spurt.
The Tigers' offense got rolling the second frame as they scored 32 points on 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the floor including four three-pointers. Princeton took its first double-digit lead of the contest after Wheatley converted an and-1 opportunity to set the score at 25-14 with 7:28 to go in the half. Cornell got the contest back within single digits, but Princeton end the second quarter on a 22-8 run to take a 47-25 advantage into halftime.
Head coach Courtney Banghart's team continued to pull away in the third stanza, taking a 68-35 lead into the final frame. Princeton outscored the Cornell, 53-24 between the second and third quarters. The Tigers led by as many as 43 before closing out the contest for their eighth road win of the season.
Game Notes:
- Princeton made 35-of-52 from the field (67.3 percent). The last time the Tigers shot over 60 percent was at Dartmouth last year (Jan. 31).
- The team tied its season-high for the third time with 94 points tonight. Over its last six games, Princeton is averaging 85.2 points per game and 50 percent (187-374) shooting.
- Tarakchian became the eight player in program history to surpass 700 career rebounds. Her 710 rebounds and is seventh best all-time.
- Princeton has won 16 straight games over Cornell.
