PRINCETON, N.J. – After playing its first 16 games of the 2016 campaign on the road, the Princeton baseball team won its home opener at Clarke Field, 7-4 against the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.
Three different Tigers, freshmen Jesper Horsted, Joseph Flynn and sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson, each had two hits while six other players recorded a hit. Senior Chris Bodurian allowed a run and struck out four as he started the contest for the Tigers. Junior Chris Giglio posted three scoreless relief innings to nab his first career victory. In 16 and 2/3 innings this season, Giglio has allowed one earned run (.54 ERA).
With one out in the second inning, Flynn ripped a base hit to left field and then came around for the game's first run as Lee-Tyson tripled on a long fly ball that split the right center field gap.
Seton Hall's Derek Jenkins came into the game second in Division I in stolen bases with 24. Jenkins' speed on the base paths led to Seton Hall's first run in the top of the third inning. The outfielder singled up the middle with one out to start the rally. After a strikeout, Jenkins stole second, third and then scampered home on a single by Mike Alescio.
The visiting Pirates tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Chris Chiaradio led off the inning with a triple to right center before scoring on a ground out by Nelson Valerio. The next hitter, Jackson Martin, walked and then circled the bases a few batters later on a RBI knock by Zack Weigel.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning, senior Andres Larramendi socked a double down the right field line. After Larramendi was lifted for a pinch hitter, junior Danny Baer took a 2-0 pitch and uncorked it over the right field fence to tie the non-conference tilt at 3-all.
This time it was Princeton's turn to take the lead as it scored twice in the sixth and two more times in the seventh. In the sixth inning, junior Chad Powers floated a ball just beyond the infield that got junior Zack Belski home to put the Tigers in front, 4-3. Lee Tyson added an insurance tally, scoring on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back doubles by Horsted and senior Danny Hoy with one out set the score at 6-3 in the seventh frame. Flynn would send Hoy home two hitters after on a base hit to right field.
While the offense was giving the home team the lead, Giglio was shutting down Seton Hall on the mound. In his three innings, the junior did not allow a hit and retired the final eight Pirates batters he faced.
The Pirates had an unearned run the eight inning, but could not push across anymore in their last at-bat. Seton Hall had one hit after the fourth inning.
Robert H.B. Baldwin '42 Head Coach of Baseball Scott Bradley's team improved its record to 7-10 this year while Seton Hall falls to 17-8. With the victory, the team has matched its win total from last season. Princeton will begin Ivy League play at Clarke Field with doubleheaders vs. Dartmouth (Sat.) and Harvard (Sun.) this weekend. Each doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m.
