PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton women's basketball team (23-4, 12-1 Ivy) gave the class of 2016 a thrilling Senior Night as it defeated the Dartmouth Big Green (12-18, 7-7 Ivy), 68-42 at the Jadwin Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
Prior to the game, the team honored its group of seniors, Amanda Berntsen, Michelle Miller, Annie Tarakchian, Alex Wheatley and Taylor Williams. The group has won 97 games and is 50-5 (.909) in the Ivy League.
With the victory tonight, the Tigers will meet the Penn Quakers on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) at Jadwin for the Ivy League title. The Quakers took the earlier matchup at the Palestra, 50-48 on Jan. 9. That was Princeton's last loss as head coach Courtney Banghart's team has rattled off 12 straight wins.
Three different players scored in double-figures for Princeton in the win over Dartmouth, highlighted by Michelle Miller's 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting (66.6 percent). Annie Tarakchian just missed her third consecutive double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Amanda Berntsen tallied 12 points while Taylor Williams registered 10 points and five rebounds.
Dartmouth made two of its first three shots, but then was stymied by the Princeton defense. The Tigers rolled off a 19-2 run to end the quarter, holding the Big Green to one basket over the final 8:36 of the frame. The home team continued the defensive intensity in the second stanza as Dartmouth made two shots and just five total in the first 20 minutes of game action. Princeton led 34-13 at halftime.
The Tigers' offense would not allow the Big Green to make a game of it in the second half as they shot 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) en route to another 34-point half and 26-point victory. The senior class, who started the game, got one more run together, checking in at 4:57 mark of the fourth quarter. Fittingly, Williams scored the final points for Princeton as the class of 2016 will look for its third career Ivy League title on Tuesday.
