September 11, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 16 Princeton field hockey team took down its second straight nationally ranked opponent, deposing of the No. 10 Delaware Blue Hens, 4-2, at Bedford Field on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Ryan McCarthy scored the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Tigers while sophomore Grace Baylis made five saves in the win.
In the eighth minute, Princeton's first shot of the contest would give it a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe slapped a shot that was deflected in by senior Cat Caro. The Tigers looked to have added a second goal in the 21st minute, but freshman Krista Hoffman's deflection just missed the net.
The No. 10 team in the country peppered Baylis with back-to-back shots a few minutes later, but the sophomore made two sprawling saves on the ground to keep Delaware off the board. The Blue Hens finally got one in the 29th minute as Taylor Lister corralled the bouncing ball and pushed it past Baylis.
In the 34th minute, off a corner, Delaware's Greta Nauck fired a shot that Esmee Peet ricocheted into the back of the net, giving the road squad a 2-1 lead. It took Princeton just 47 seconds to respond as McCarthy was awarded a penalty stroke that she slipped by goalie Emmeline Oltmans, tying the contest at 2-all. The Blue Hens had consecutive corners as time expired in the first half, but were held in check.
Three minutes into the second stanza, Princeton had two excellent scoring chances that were thwarted. Oltmans stopped freshman Carlotta von Gierke's shot and then Donio-Enscoe's attempt was blocked away on the goal line by Kiki Bink. Following a green card on Delaware, the Tigers kept at it on the offensive end with three consecutive shots, but couldn't get one through.
With 11 minutes to go, McCarthy was dribbling along the goal line, had her shot knocked away, but then sent the deflection into the corner of the net which hit off the referee, putting the home team back ahead, 3-2. Delaware, looking for the equalizer, was awarded two straight corners with six minutes left in the game. A blocked attempt and Baylis save were highlighted by sophomore Nicole Catalino whipping the ball off the goal line, thus keeping the Tigers in front.
After a Princeton timeout, sophomore Sophia Tornetta cleared a defender in the circle and swiped a backhanded blast by Oltmans, giving head coach Carla Tagliente's team the breathing room it needed to secure its third straight victory.
Princeton will travel to No. 11 Virginia on Friday (4 p.m.) before welcoming No. 7 Maryland to Bedford Field on Sept. 20 (6 p.m.).
