Tornetta Picked as Ivy League Co-Player of the Week
September 12, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Sophia Tornetta was selected as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week after a seven-point performance in Princeton's two wins this weekend.
Â
It's Tornetta's third weekly accolade as she was selected the conference's Rookie of the Week twice last season. She parlayed her success last year into the Ivy League Rookie of the Year honor.
Â
Tornetta got the weekend started with a five-point outing in Princeton's 3-2 comeback victory over No. 12 Albany on Friday. Trailing 2-1, the striker deflected junior Ryan McCarthy's (last week's Ivy League Player of the Week) pass in the back of the net to tie the game. Later in the contest, Tornetta, in the open field, drew the goalie, then sent a pass over to junior Lexi Quirk, who deposited the game-winning goal with 3:23 remaining.
Â
On Sunday, with her team up 3-2, the sophomore cleared a defender in the circle and swiped a backhanded blast past the goalie as the clock ticked under three minutes, giving her team some much needed breathing room.
Â
With three straight victories, the No. 16 Princeton Tigers head to No. 11 Virginia on Friday (4 p.m.) before No. 7 Maryland travels to Bedford Field on Sept. 20 (6 p.m.).
