Ashleigh Johnson Named Swimming World Magazine's Women's Water Polo Player Of The Year
January 04, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – For the second straight year, Ashleigh Johnson has been named the Swimming World Magazine's Female Water Polo Player of the Year.
After her stellar summer at the Rio Olympics, Johnson was named an espnW IMPACT25 honoree for the Woman of the Year. She was also the first water polo player to ever win the Women's Sports Foundation SportsWoman of the Year award.
Johnson helped the United States women's water polo team to its second consecutive gold medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. In the team's six games, she allowed just 28 goals, made 51 saves and was named the tournament's top goalkeeper. Johnson was also the first ever African-American to make the U.S. national team.
In her time at Princeton, the Miami native has posted an 81-13 overall mark, turning away 1,062 of the 1,533 shots she has faced en route to a 0.693 save percentage. Putting together three of the highest single-season save totals in program history, the 2015 Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) Player of the Year is already the Tigers' career leader.
Johnson will play for a Princeton squad that returns four of its top seven scorers from last year's team that went to the CWPA Semifinals. The 2017 season gets underway at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown during the Super Bowl Weekend. (Feb. 4-5).
