Alarie Goes For Career-High 29 Points, but No. 24/25 Villanova Holds Off Princeton, 62-59

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 24/25 Villanova Wildcats (6-0) held off a late rally from the Princeton Tigers (3-2), to pick up a 62-59 victory at Jadwin Gym on Wednesday evening.
Bella Alarie scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting (76.9 percent), adding nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Leslie Robinson snagged 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists while Abby Meyers dropped in 10 points in the loss.
Princeton saw the first separation of the contest, rolling off six straight points to take a 11-4 lead at the 3:56 mark of the first quarter. Robinson registered all of the Tigers' points in that stretch. Villanova closed with a quick 5-0 spurt, closing its deficit to 14-11 after the first frame. In the quarter, Alarie contributed eight points, five boards and two blocks.
Trailing by six, 22-16, the nationally ranked Wildcats used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 24-all as the clock ticked near three minutes. A trey from Adrianna Hahn gave Villanova its first advantage of the game, 27-26, not long after. Meyers' step-back jumper right before the half put Princeton back on top, 30-29, after 20 minutes.
A bucket from Carlie Littlefield pushed the Tigers ahead by six (38-32) as the clock read 6:23, but Villanova ripped off seven consecutive points retake a 39-38 lead. The two teams exchanged runs before a three-pointer from the road squad's Bridget Herlihy put it in front, 46-44. Mary Gedaka's layup ahead of the buzzer gave the Wildcats a two-point advantage (48-46) as the two WNIT teams from last year advanced into the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats made 4-of-6 from the floor to open the final frame, outscoring the Tigers 14-7 in that span to take a 62-53 lead with 4:03 remaining. Hahn and Herlihy recorded 10 of Villanova's points in that run.
Alarie would not let the Tigers go quietly. The 2017 Ivy League Rookie of the Year was incredible in the last 10 minutes, going 3-of-3 shooting, making all four free throws, finishing with 11 points. Her four from the charity stripe got the Tigers within five (2:02 to go). Meyers' layup with 40 seconds to go cut the Tigers' deficit to three, 62-59.
On Villanova's next possession, Alarie blocked Megan Quinn's shot. Following a timeout, the Tigers got one more try to tie the game, but the attempt was denied.
Alex Louin led Villanova with 16 points while Hahn had 15 in the victory. No team led by more than nine points while the game featured seven lead changes and five ties.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday against Delaware at Jadwin. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Ivy League Network and be shown on television on NBC Sports Philadelphia + (formerly the Comcast Network).
