December 02, 2017 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
Day 2 Results
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team continued to move away from the field during the second day of the 2017 Big Al Open, while the Tiger women made a big move to go from third to first in a very competitive three-team race.
The Princeton men will head into Sunday's final day of competition (prelims 9, finals 5) with 868.5 points, well ahead of Brown's second-place total of 415. The Princeton women have 608 points, while Brown remains in striking distance with 531, and Villanova is third with 485.
MEN
Princeton opened with the quartet of Alex Lewis, Corey Lau, and tri-captains Zach Buerger and Ben Schafer taking second in the 200 medley relay in 1:28.81.
The Tigers put four in the top six of the 400 IM, and freshman Sam Tarter led those Tigers with a runner-up finish in 3:52.34. Senior Corey Okubo took fourth in 3:53.91, while junior Cole Buese took fifth in 3:54.91 and senior Liam Karas took sixth in 3:55.54.
The captain duo of Schafer and Buerger proved to be the best of the field in the 100 fly; Schafer claimed the win in 47.70, while Buerger finished second in 48.19. Junior Murphy McQuet followed that with a win in the 200 free in 1:36.21, and classmate Tyler Lin claimed a victory in the 100 breast in 54.92.
Freshman Colton Young (342.85), and sophomore Charlie Minns (334.95) finished 2-3 in the 1-meter diving for their debut performance of the weekend. Following a third-place finish by Lewis in the 100 back (49.55), the quartet of Tarter, Karas, Tyler Sullivan, and Charles Leibson finished second in the 800 free relay in 6:37.28.
WOMEN
Princeton got the Saturday finals session off to a strong start, as the quartet of Isabel Reis, Jenny Ma, Elsa Welshofer, and Maddy Veith won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.40, less than a quarter second faster than Brown's top relay.
The Tigers built on that momentum in the first individual event of the session, and it came thanks to a brilliant swim by junior tri-captain Joanna Curry, who topped the field by nearly three full seconds to win the 400 IM in 4:17.38. Freshman Regan Barney helped build that advantage by finishing third in 4:21.18.
Princeton got big points in the 100 fly final, as the trio of Elaine Zhou (54.69), Welshofer (55.00), and senior tri-captain Claire McIlmail (55.13) went 4-5-6 and topped all Ivy rivals. Freshman Lauren McGrath took third in the 200 free B final (1:50.28), but one of her classmates quickly got Princeton back on the winning side. Ma won the 100 breast in 1:02.15, while Zhou added a fourth-place finish in 1:03.37. Freshman Stephanie Nelson added a third-place finish in the 100 back (55.31).
The Tigers made a big move on the 1-meter board, as five Princeton divers made the A final. Freshman Sine Scribbick took third overall with 265.30 points, while sophomore Natasha MacManus added a fourth-place score of 262.85. Carolyn MacFarlane, Sophia Peifer, and Colleen McHugh each added A final scores to help Princeton grab the team lead.
