Princeton Runs By Dartmouth, 85-55, Banghart Collects Win No. 200
February 03, 2017 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers hit 12 three-pointers to take down the Dartmouth Big Green, 85-55, at Jadwin Gym on Friday afternoon to give head coach Courtney Banghart her 200th career win.
Â
Banghart, the Dartmouth '00 graduate, finished her Ivy League career as the all-time leader in three-pointers made (273) so it only seemed appropriate that her team would use 12 treys in helping her become just the fourth coach in Ivy history to reach the 200-win milestone.
Â
Freshman Bella Alarie led the squad with 14 points, three three-pointers and three blocks. Gabrielle Rush, Taylor Brown, Kenya Holland and Caroline Davis also hit from beyond the arc. Rush also dished out a career-best five assists. Senior Vanessa Smith was perfect from the floor, making all five attempts, finishing with 11 points in the victory.
Â
Trailing early in the first quarter, Princeton used a seven-point spurt highlighted by five tallies from Alarie to go in front, 11-5, with 3:10 to go. With 30 seconds to go in the frame, Holland got into the action with a long-range bucket to set the score at 17-14 after the first 10 minutes.
Â
As the second quarter got underway, the home team used an 8-0 run and 14-2 jump to take a 33-18 advantage after a three-point play by Smith (5:18). Three baskets from long distance expanded the Princeton lead to as many as 20 before the score settled at 44-26 at the intermission.
Â
In the second stanza, the Tigers put on a strong offensive performance, going 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the field. It wasn't just offense that gave Banghart's squad a big lead as Dartmouth was held to just three baskets in the quarter.
Â
Dartmouth would not get any closer the rest of the contest as Princeton used another big run, scoring 11 straight during the third quarter to push the game out of reach.
Â
Princeton's bench unit contributed a season-best 44 points highlighted by Rush's 13 points while sophomore Sydney Jordan made all three shots, tallying seven points, three rebounds and three assists. The Tigers had 12 players score in the game and grabbed 41 rebounds, including 15 off the offensive glass. It's the fourth time this season Princeton made at least 10 threes in a game.
Â
The Tigers improved to 8-9 overall and evened their record to 2-2 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth now sits 6-12 this season and 1-4 in the conference. Tomorrow is National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Jadwin. Children 12 and under who attend the sports clinic (5 p.m.) get free admission to the game. It's also Alumni Night as the program will honor over 30 alumni from over five decades in a ceremony prior to the game vs. Harvard. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
