D'Arcy Upset, Seeded Wins Highlight Record-Setting Session For Princeton Wrestling Team
March 16, 2017 | Wrestling
There was real excitement for the Princeton wrestling community to see fourth-seeded Tiger freshman Matthew Kolodzik take the mat for the first time at the NCAA Championships.
Who would have guessed those fans would be treated to a thrill before that moment ever happened?
Sophomore Pat D'Arcy, one of a record-breaking seven Tigers in competition at the 2017 NCAA Championships this weekend, put a jolt into the Scottrade Center crowd by upsetting 13th-seeded Earl Hall of Iowa State 8-1 to open Session I of the event. Kolodzik and 16th-seeded senior Jordan Laster followed with wins, which means three Tigers will compete in the Round of 16 in the championship bracket Thursday night (7 pm ET, ESPN/WatchESPN).
Mike D'Angelo, Jonathan Schleifer, Brett Harner and Ray O'Donnell each dropped their openers, but each can still wrestle their way back to All-America honors. The first round of wrestlebacks will also be held during Session II Thursday night.
D'Arcy got things going early with a takedown of Hall, and he never relented against his seeded opponent. A turn helped him take control of the match, and it sets him up with a showdown against fourth-seeded Cory Clark of Iowa.
Kolodzik was in full control of his opener against Maryland's Ryan Diehl. The Ivy League Rookie of the Year scored a takedown early in the first, and he used a strong ride and then an early takedown in the second to open a 5-1 lead. He finished the match 8-3 and will now face unseeded Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State, who had been the No. 2 seed at the weight in the Big Ten Championships.
After a scoreless first period, Laster escaped and scored a late takedown of Nick Barber to hold a 3-0 lead entering the 3rd. He carried that advantage to a 5-2 win, and now he faces the reigning national champion, Penn State's Zain Retherford.
