EIWA Update: Kolodzik, Laster Reach Finals; D'Angelo Will Wrestle For Historic NCAA Bid
March 04, 2017 | Wrestling
BRACKETS THROUGH SESSION 3
Both Matthew Kolodzik and Jordan Laster will wrestle for EIWA titles tonight, while Matt D'Angelo will wrestle for a historic NCAA bid to complete an impressive weekend for Princeton at the 2017 EIWA Championships.
Neither Kolodzik nor Laster had an easy run to the final, but that should be expected during the final day at EIWAs. Kolodzik, the top seed at 141, needed a late takedown in the final period of his semifinal to defeat fourth-seeded Jared Prince of Navy 3-1. He will now face second-seeded Randy Cruz of Lehigh; Kolodzik rallied with a late takedown in regulation, followed by an overtime takedown, to defeat Cruz during a dual match in Bethlehem during December.
Laster had an even tougher road, as he needed a late takedown to force overtime, but he used that momentum to control the extra session; his takedown of third-seeded Matthew Cimato near the edge of the mat will send the Tiger senior to his second career EIWA final. Ironically, his first EIWA championship appearance ended in a loss to Cruz, Kolodzik's opponent. Laster will face fifth-seeded Hunter Ladnier of Harvard, an upset winner over top-seeded Laike Gardner of Lehigh. Laster defeated Ladnier 6-1 in the dual victory over Harvard last month.
Those two are assured of joining Pat D'Arcy, Jonathan Schleifer and Ray O'Donnell at the NCAA Championships two weeks from now in St. Louis. Those three clinched their bid this morning, and all will wrestle one more time tonight. Sophomore Mike D'Angelo could make it six NCAA bids — which would be the most ever for Princeton — if he can defeat Brown's Steven Galiardo in the third-place match at 157.
D'Arcy scored a late takedown in his first match to secure a 7-4 win over Bucknell's Joey Gould, and he received a medical forfeit in the next match to clinch his first career trip to NCAAs. Schleifer made quick work of seventh-seeded Ben Harvey of Army with an 11-0 major decision that clinched his berth. O'Donnell, who dropped a hard-fought semifinal to top-seeded Joey Goodhart of Drexel, bounced back in style with a 6-1 win over Connor Calkins of Binghamton. Like D'Arcy and D'Angelo, he will wrestle for third place.
Senior Brett Harner will wrestle for fifth place after two hard-fought losses. He dropped a 4-3 semifinal to third-seeded Frank Mattiace in the second tiebreaker, as the Penn veteran had the advantage in riding time. Harner led his wrestleback against Cornell's Ben Honis 2-0 before Honis caught and pinned him to clinch the automatic bid. Harner will face unseeded Rocco Caywood of Army for fifth and then will await the announcement of the at-large NCAA bids later this week.
Princeton remains in third with 99 points, though the Tigers built their advantage over fourth-place Army by 19.5 points. Princeton is in striking distance of Lehigh, which has 107.5 points, though it would take a nearly perfect final session to jump the Mountain Hawks.
