Day, Gamble Selected to NCAA Doubles Championship
May 03, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Senior Alex Day and junior Luke Gamble earned a bid to the NCAA doubles championship, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
They are the first Tigers to play in the NCAA doubles tournament since 2001, when Kyle Kliegerman '01 and John Portlock '01 qualified and won their first-round match to advance to the round of 16. Matija Pecotic '13 was the last Tiger to play in the singles tournament, doing so in his final two seasons and winning his first-round match as a senior in 2013.
There will again be 32 doubles pairs in this year's tournament, which will run May 24-29 at the University of Georgia. The bracket for the event will be announced closer to the start date.
Day and Gamble are 19-13 this season including 13-8 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 spot. Against fellow nationally-ranked competition, Day and Gamble are 3-1 this season, getting a win in the fall of then-No. 1 Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State at the ITA All-America Championships. They've also defeated then-No. 9 Tommy Bennett and David Warren of Rice and then-No. 9 Simon Freund and Morgan Mays of UC Santa Barbara, both in duals.
Ranked as high as No. 13 in early March, Day and Gamble were ranked No. 51 on the most recent ITA ranking, released April 25, and received an automatic bid for being the highest-ranked Ivy League team and in the national top 60 including all matches through last weekend. In the final rankings before the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments begin, released May 4, the Princeton pair ranked 59th in the nation.
