Lightweights Conclude 2017 With 4- Silver, 5th in V8 Final
June 04, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton lightweight men wrapped up their 2017 season with a fifth-place finish in the IRA varsity eight championship race on Lake Natoma. The Tigers, who also leave the Sacramento State Aquatic Center with silver medals in the fours without coxswain, sent a very young squad to California, and they can build a lot off the experiences from California.
Top-seeded Cornell won the national championship in 5:40.172, though it was the Big Red and Penn who posted the best opening split and made it a two-team dual at the 500 mark. Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia each worked hard to make up the early deficit, but the four were also in a tight showdown for the final spot on the medal podium. None of the back four could mount much of a push at the top two, though Yale had the best final sprint to take bronze by about a quarter second over Harvard. Princeton edged reigning national champion Columbia for the top-five finish.
Princeton, which handed Cornell one of its toughest races of the season in the Platt Cup showdown, stayed fairly tight with the rest of the lightweight field throughout the season — Cornell in the IRA final was the only boat to beat Princeton by more than five seconds. However, the Tigers never quite found that next level of speed that would allow them to turn small deficits into victories.
Princeton did reach the grand finals in all three of its events, and it leaves with a third straight medal in the lightweight four without coxswain. The Tigers, who won gold in 2015 and silver last year in this event, defeated Cornell by more than seven seconds to place second to Harvard.
The varsity four with coxswain also reached the grand final; the Tigers finished sixth in 6:46.914.
