Ivy POY Weisz Heads to Israel to Begin Pro Career
August 07, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Spencer Weisz, the versatile tri-captain on the Princeton men's basketball team's Ivy-unbeaten team in 2017, has signed with Hapoel Galil Gilboa in Israel's top league to begin his professional career.
The Florham Park, N.J. native won Ivy League Player of the Year honors in 2017, becoming just the eighth player in the awards' 40-plus years to claim both the Ivy Player and Rookie of the Year honors in his career. This past season, while helping Princeton to the NCAA Tournament after a 14-0 Ivy League record and a title in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament, Weisz averaged 10.6 points a game while leading the team with 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists a contest. He and classmate Steven Cook, who signed to play in Estonia, were the only Tigers to start all 30 games and were also the only players to average double-figure points and at least five rebounds a game for the season.
Weisz finished 12th in program history with 1,241 career points, fifth with 209 3-pointers, eighth with 605 career rebounds, and second with 383 assists. He's the only player in program history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 3-pointers, and he capped his time at Princeton by winning the school's Roper Trophy as the top senior male athlete.
Hapoel Gilboa Galil is based in Gan Ner in northern Israel, just more than an hour northeast of the major coastal city of Tel Aviv.Â
