Princeton's Strong Second Half Start Pushes It Past Cornell, 75-54

PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind a 17-0 run to open the second half, the Princeton Tigers (13-3, 3-0 Ivy) ran by the Cornell Big Red (4-11, 0-2 Ivy), 75-54, at Jadwin Gym on Saturday evening.

For the second straight game, the Tigers had four players in double figures with Leslie Robinson's 16 points leading the way. The senior captain finished with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Bella Alarie added 14, while Gabrielle Rush (11) and Abby Meyers (10) also scored at least 10 points.

The two Ivy foes had four lead changes and two ties in the first frame as Princeton took a 13-10 lead after 10 minutes.

The Tigers used a 13-6 stretch to start the second stanza, that included going 5-of-6 from the floor, to jump ahead by 10 (26-16) as the clock read 6:49. Cornell did not go away as rolled off a 12-5 spurt over five minutes to get within three (34-31). The two Ivy foes combined to shoot 64 percent in the frame and make 11 three-pointers in the half as the home unit led 36-34 at the intermission.

Princeton had a remarkable start to the second half as it registered 17 consecutive points, while holding Cornell without a basket for the first five minutes of the quarter. During that 17-0 push, the Tigers did not miss, making seven shots. Cornell snagged its first and only basket of the stanza with 2:10 remaining. Princeton took a 61-39 lead into the last 10 minutes. The Tigers were 10-of-13 shooting (76.9 percent) out of the break. Robinson (nine points) and Carlie Littlefield (eight points) each outscored the Big Red themselves in third quarter.

Cornell would not get within 20 the rest of the way. After making 8-of-9 in the second quarter, the Big Red went 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) in the third. Samantha Widemann had a game-high 17 points in the loss.

One night after grabbing 10 rebounds, Taylor Baur posted a team-best nine boards against Cornell. Four different Tigers had at least four rebounds in the game. Princeton's 51.9 percent shooting is its second highest total of the season. 10 players recorded points for the home squad in the victory.

Head coach Courtney Banghart's team has earned at least a seven-game winning streak in each of the past nine seasons. The Tigers will take a break for finals before heading on the road to take on Yale (Feb. 2) and Brown (Feb. 3). The Yale contest will tip off at 6 p.m., and the Brown game will get underway at 4 p.m. Both games will be streamed on the Ivy League Network. Â
