Men's Tennis Team Opens With Twinbill Sweep of Michigan State, Wagner
January 28, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The dual-match season began Sunday for the Princeton men's tennis team with a pair of wins over Michigan State and Wagner in Jadwin Gym.
"For our first outing of the year, it was a very productive day. It's great to see all 12 guys contribute to our success," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "After a relatively comprehensive doubles effort against Michigan State, we were pushed in singles. It was nice to see the underclassmen step up and secure the needed singles points. We'll get back to work before heading out to the Pacific Northwest for some challenging matches next week."
Against Michigan State, Princeton saw two rookies pick up wins at the top of the singles lineup in 114th-ranked Ryan Seggerman and Damian Rodriguez, and that followed the Tigers sweeping the doubles point and on the way to a 5-2 win. Rodriguez, Seggerman, Payton Holden and Davey Roberts were all winners in both singles and doubles.
Princeton improved to 2-0 all-time against the Spartans, adding Sunday's win to a 2013 victory in East Lansing.
That win preceded a 6-1 victory over Wagner, a first-time Tiger opponent. Princeton again swept the doubles point, and aside from Seggerman at the top, Princeton had an entirely different singles lineup against the Seahawks. Seggerman, Diego Vives and Jimmy Wasserman were winners in both singles and doubles.
Results from Sunday's matches are below. The Tigers will take to the road next weekend, facing Portland Thursday in Tualatin, Ore., and Washington Saturday.
