Top-Ranked Princeton Opens Huge Ivy Week Wednesday At CSA Finalist Penn
January 29, 2018 | Women's Squash
January hasn't been about quantity for the new No. 1 team in women's squash, but it has certainly been about quality.
And the Tigers have another opportunity to post one more quality win before the calendar changes.
Princeton, which moved to #1 in the latest CSA squash rankings, turned heads on a national level when it rallied from a 4-1 deficit to upset #2 Trinity Jan. 11 inside the Jadwin Squash Courts. Three days later, the Tigers powered into their finals break with a convincing 8-1 win over Ivy rival Yale to complete a 2-0 start in league play.
Princeton couldn't have asked for much more momentum as it enters the biggest week of the regular season, and it will need every ounce of it as it faces two major rivals on the road. That stretch begins Wednesday night at 5 pm, when the Tigers bring their 9-0 record to the Ringe Squash Courts in Philadelphia to take on the seventh-ranked — but highly dangerous — Penn Quakers.
Princeton has gotten strong play throughout its lineup, and it has been led by the senior co-captain duo of Olivia Fiechter and Kira Keating, both of whom have combined to go 16-0 on the season. Fiechter has won 27 of 29 individual games at the No. 1 position, and will face her toughest test of the season against two-time CSA finalist Reeham Salah.
The Tigers have also been especially strong at the bottom of the lineup this year. Junior Isabel Hirshberg and sophomore Madison Soukup have combined to go 17-1 while playing much of the season in the bottom third of the lineup; they both had key wins in the comeback victory over Trinity, including a 3-2 win for Soukup at the No. 9 spot.
Penn is currently 5-3 on the season, but it has dealt with several injuries during the first half of the season, and it could be positioned for a strong finish if it can get its full lineup back. The Quakers have had great success at home recently; they have five straight in Ringe over Princeton, including an 8-1 win there in 2016, and overall Penn has won four straight regular season matches over the Tigers.
The 5 pm match will precede the men's showdown between the sixth-ranked Tigers and the fifth-ranked Quakers later that night.
