Shorthanded Volleyball Stuns #8 Stanford For Highest-Ranked Win In 20+ Years
January 06, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
Now that's an early statement.
The Princeton men's volleyball team, playing without injured All-East middle Junior Oboh, posted a Friday night victory over #8 Stanford in the second match of the 2018 Asics Invitational. The result is a historic one for the Tigers, who had never defeated a team ranked higher than #10 since it became a full varsity program in 1997.
Princeton's previous-best win came Feb. 28, 2014, when the Tigers ended a 35-match drought against Penn State with a 3-2 win in Dillon Gym.
That match thrilled a capacity crowd in Princeton's home building; this one finished at 1:37 am in a gym across the nation, but it was one that showed just how much potential and excitement this team has for the 2018 season. Starting six underclassmen, the Tigers used big rallies in the first, third and fifth sets for a stunning 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14 win over the Cardinal.
While classmates George Huhmann and Parker Dixon provided the kinds of efforts that earned them All-EIVA distinction last season, sophomore Greg Luck was the one who took this match over. Luck posted career highs in kills (21), digs (10), and blocks (6), and he hit .452 while leading the Tigers in successful serves received. He carried the Tigers back from a 24-21 deficit in the first set with three late kills and a set-clinching block, and he carried that level of play throughout the match.
Huhmann had 14 kills and three blocks, while Dixon added 13 kills and five digs in the win. Freshman setter Joe Kelly paced the offense with 45 assists, while junior Corry Short added eight digs. Freshman Cade Keegan added five digs in the win.
Princeton's final rally of the day came in the fifth set. After head coach Sam Shweisky called timeout with his team trailing 9-5, Princeton clawed back with kills from its three sophomore standouts to get within 13-12, and then Dixon and Luck recorded consecutive kills to earn a match ball. Stanford fought off one, but a Huhmann kill gave Princeton a second chance, and a Stanford error clinched the win.
Princeton completed its season-opening weekend by dropping a 3-0 match to 11th-ranked Cal State-Northridge. Freshman Jess Hunt had the best match of his young career with 11 kills, while classmate Kelly added 25 assists.
Princeton will make its home debut next Friday, Jan. 12, when it hosts IPFW on the Ivy League Network.
