Late Run Propels Dartmouth Over Princeton
February 10, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Dartmouth kept the Princeton men's basketball team off the board for just more than five minutes as the second half wound down Saturday night in New Hampshire, giving the Big Green a 72-56 win over the Tigers to close Princeton's first full Ivy League road weekend.
Princeton led 52-50 on a Devin Cannady 3-pointer with seven-plus minutes to go, but the Big Green took off on a 12-0 run during which the Tigers didn't score until Amir Bell drove to the bucket for an and-1 opportunity with two minutes left. That pulled Princeton within eight at 62-54, but the Big Green let Princeton no closer.
"It's frustrating, but Dartmouth played great," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton men's basketball, said. "We have not been able to really practice much (with three games this week), so thank goodness we get a chance to practice. We've got to be incredible at practicing, and then we go back on the road. We're not out of it, but we've got work to do and we need some help."
The loss dips Princeton to 3-5 in Ivy League play, and wins from Yale and Brown Saturday night put those teams into a tie for third place in the league behind a pair of 7-1 teams in Penn and Harvard. With six games to go, those four are the teams holding the Ivy League Tournament spots, but Columbia, Princeton and Cornell sit just a game out of that last spot. Princeton will head on the road to Cornell Friday and Columbia Saturday.
Princeton led by as much as seven at 21-14 past the midway point of the first half, but the Big Green didn't let that lead grow any further and had the deficit down to one at the half as Princeton led 26-25.
The second half kept the teams within two points until Dartmouth began its run.
Dartmouth outshot the Tigers from the field 47.2 percent to 39 percent and controlled the glass, 43-23. Ten of those boards were offensive rebounds, leading to a 10-2 edge in second-chance points.
