PRINCETON, N.J. – Using a remarkable defensive effort, the Princeton Tigers (17-4, 7-1 Ivy) swept the Penn Quakers (15-6, 6-2 Ivy) for the first time since the 2014-15 season with a 60-40 decision at Jadwin Gym on Tuesday evening. Â
The Quakers would not score another basket.
Â
Princeton finished the Ivy matchup on a 11-1 run and held Penn to just one bucket in the final 10 minutes of action. The Quakers' 16 baskets and 25.8 percent shooting are their lowest totals of the season.
Â
Bella Alarie went for 18 points (6-of-10 shooting), 15 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. It's her 18th career double-double and 10th of the season. Abby Meyers had 17 off the bench while Leslie Robinson was the first player with 10 assists in a game since Blake Dietrick in December of 2014.
Â
The Quakers led 7-6 halfway through the first quarter before Princeton rolled off seven straight, highlighted by five points from Meyers, forcing a Penn timeout. The Tigers led for the rest of the frame, taking an 18-15 advantage into the second stanza.
Â
A 14-2 spurt by head coach Courtney Banghart's unit to begin the second quarter pushed its lead to 15, 32-17. In that span, the Quakers were 1-of-9 with four turnovers. Princeton kept its distance, taking a 34-20 lead into the break. The Tigers held the Quakers to 2-of-15 from the floor in the quarter.
Â
Penn used the first three minutes of the second half to get as close as eight, but Alarie answered with a trey to put Princeton back up by double-digits, 37-26, at 6:49 mark. The two Ivy foes exchanged baskets before the home squad settled with a 46-37 lead after 30 minutes.
Â
Alarie sank her second three-pointer of the game to open the scoring in the fourth stanza just a minute in. Meyers also hit from beyond the arc during the Tigers' 11-1 push that sealed the game. Penn's three points in the final 10 minutes are the lowest by an opponent since Princeton held UMBC to two in the second quarter (Dec. 30).
Â
The Tigers registered 30 points from their bench for the fourth consecutive game. With the victory, Banghart's squad surpasses its win total from last season.
Â
Anna Ross snagged 14 points for the Quakers while Nwokedi chipped in 12 in the loss.
