Princeton Honors Champions in Final Home Game of Regular Season
February 17, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Princeton hockey program honored its 1998 and 2008 ECAC Championship teams with a ceremonial puck drop by Stanley Cup champions George Parros '03 and Kevin Westgarth '07 as the Tigers faced Union in the final home game of the regular season. The Dutchmen, sitting second in the ECAC standings, took a 4-1 game but didn't dampen the excitement in Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton can finished anywhere between 5-9 place, and needs four points to clinch home ice as the Tigers are in seventh place tie with Yale.
Union (20-13-1 15-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Liam Morgan and Ryan Walker. Morgan sauced in a shot from the left wing that deflected off of a bunch of bodies and snuck past Ryan Ferland. Walker was able to get the final touch on a set up by Greg Campbell. Jack Adams was denied with the paddle before Walker got the rebound and tucked it in.
Adams expanded the lead early in the second after Walker intercepted a pass behind the cage and pushed the puck into the slot for the Adams' marker.
Junior Ryan Kuffner who ranked second in the nation in goals per game, scored his 23rd goal of the season with teammate Max Véronneau assisting. Véronneau leads the country in assists per game and ranks third in points overall. A David Hallisey shot was turned away by Jake Kupsky and into the corner where Véronneau got to it first and sent it across the ice to Kuffner. Kuffner collected, circled and fired from the top circle to beat Kupsky.
With 93 career points Kuffner now ranks 22nd all-time on the Princeton (12-12-3, 9-10-1) scoring list, while Véronneau's 91 points positions him 23rd in the points race.
Linemmate Alex Riche was out for the game, along with leading scoring defender Josh Teves, forcing the Tigers to shuffle their lines. The Tigers went 0 for 1 on the power play, a category the squads ranks fifth nationally in.
Ferland made 39 saves for the Tigers, while Kupsky stopped 28.
Princeton concludes the regular season next weekend, Feb. 23 & 24 at Clarkson & St. Lawrence.
