Princeton, DeNunzio Pool Welcomes League Rivals For 2018 Ivy League Championships
February 20, 2018 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team has traveled all over the east to test itself for the coming weekend. From an early-season meet against two ranked Virginia programs to two thrillers recently in Annapolis and Boston, the Tigers have faced strong competition to prepare for their championship weekend.
This time, however, teams will be traveling to them.
DeNunzio Pool will serve as the host for the 2018 Ivy League Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, starting this Wednesday, Feb. 21, and continuing through Saturday, Feb. 24. Ticket information is below, and you can watch the Thursday-Saturday prelim/finals sessions on the Ivy League Network.
CHAMPIONSHIP LINKS
Princeton leads the Ivy League with 31 championships, but dual meet champion Harvard comes into this weekend as both the 2017-18 dual meet champion and the favorite to repeat. History has shown that there can be magic inside the friendly confines of DeNunzio, and Princeton will try to create more on both the individual and team level this weekend.
The meet opens Wednesday night at 6 pm with both the 200 medley and 800 free relays, and then the meet will take on the standard prelim/finals schedule over the next three days (event order is below). Here are a few names to watch for the weekend.
Cole Buese • The versatile junior will be dangerous in numerous events, but he comes into this weekend as the top seed in the 200 fly (1:44.83). He'll be targeting both his first Ivy title and NCAA bid, and he'd love to take a run at the program record, held by first-year assistant coach Doug Lennox '09 (1:42.71).
Ben Schafer • The senior tri-captain should be in numerous relays as one of the team's top sprinters, but his strongest individual event should come Friday night in the 100 fly. He currently has the third-fastest time in the Ivy League (47.56), and he was the 2016 runner-up in that event.
Zach Buerger • Another senior tri-captain, Buerger has reached the A finals in both the 100 and 200 fly in each of his previous Ivy Championships. He has top-10 times in both currently, including the seventh-best time in the 100 (48.09).
Corey Okubo • Maybe the biggest wild card of the entire weekend, Okubo has been a standout swimmer for Princeton since he first stepped on campus, but injuries have plagued his senior season. The coaching staff isn't sure how he'll respond over three days, but they know he can be dangerous in any event he swims.
Charlie Minns • The sophomore diver has been particularly strong during the second half of the season. He and freshman teammate Colton Young will be an interesting to pair to watch among a strong field of divers.
