Princeton Set to Send Nine to NCAA Championships

Nine Princeton fencers have qualified for the NCAA Championships to run Thursday through Sunday at Penn State.
Princeton enters this year's event as the only school in the country to take home a top-four trophy from each of the last seven NCAAs, highlighted by the 2013 title.
The women will compete first this year, beginning with the first three of five rounds of pool bouts Thursday and then the final two rounds and the semifinals and finals for individual championships Friday. Thursday, foil will start at 9 a.m. with épée beginning at 11 a.m. and saber at 1:30 p.m. All three weapons will start at 9 a.m. Friday with individual semifinals starting at 1:30 p.m. in the order of épée, foil and saber. The men will follow the same schedule Saturday and Sunday. The individual semifinals and finals will again be streamed on ESPN3.
Five of Princeton's nine entrants this year have previous NCAA Championships experience:
Kasia Nixon (So., women's épée): first appearance
Tatijana Stewart (Fr., women's épée): first appearance
Maia Chamberlain (So., women's saber): 2017: T3rd, All-America
Allison Lee (Sr., women's saber): 2015: 7th, All-America
Wesley Johnson (Jr., men's épée): 2017: T3rd, All-America
Samuel Barmann (So., men's foil): 2017: 19th
Julian Knodt (Fr., men's foil): first appearance
Edward Chin (Sr., men's saber): 2015: 8th, All-America; 2016: T3rd, All-America; 2017: 16th
Daniel Kwak (Fr., men's saber): first appearance
There are 24 fencers in each of the six weapons. A win in each of every fencer's 23 pool bouts will contribute a point toward his or her team's score, and the team with the highest score at the end of Sunday's final round will take home the combined men's/women's team title that Princeton won in 2013 and that Notre Dame is defending. Teams can qualify up to 12 fencers, and Columbia, the Fighting Irish and Ohio State are the only ones that qualified the maximum number. Though a team score of 270 is the highest possible score, the winning number has been between 165 and 195 every year since women's saber was added as the sixth weapon in 2000.
