Kuffner Scores 100th Career Point as Princeton Takes Game 1, 8-2
March 02, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/2/18) - Junior Ryan Kuffner scored his 100th career point as Princeton cruised to an 8-2 win over Brown in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey first-round playoff series. The eight goals is the most scored by the Tigers in the playoffs, besting the six the squad had in a 6-5 win over Cornell in 1999.
Both Kuffner and junior defender Josh Teves had four-point games, each scoring twice and adding two assists. Junior Max Véronneau had a three-point night with one goal and two assists, while sophomores Liam Grande, Jackson Cressey and freshman Luke Keenan had two points apiece. Princeton's power-play unit, ranked fourth in the nation headed into the weekend, converted on four of five opportunities including two on a five-minute major in the third. Freshman Ryan Ferland stopped 33 of 35 shots in goal for the Tigers.
Princeton jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes with Teves ripping in a shot from the left point and Kuffner knocking in a Véronneau rebound. Tommy Marchin cut Brown's deficit to one at the close of the first frame when he potted one right off a face off deep in the zone.
The Bears started the second on the power play and were able to knot the game at 2-2 on an Alec Mehr tally from Marchin and Sam Lafferty.
Sophomore Derek Topatigh put the Tigers back on top for good at 8:16 with his first goal of the season, with help from Keenan and freshman Reid Yochim. Kuffner added his second of the game, on the man-advantage, three minutes later when he collected a Teves rebound in the corner and put it past Luke Kania. Kuffner would get his 100th career point assisting on Véronneau's goal on a 4x3 power-play at 17:34 as Princeton took a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
Grande had an unassisted highlight reel goal at 11:54, his second goal of the season, before Princeton got goals from Teves and freshman Jake Paganelli 39 seconds apart during Alex Brink's five-minute penalty.
