Ivy Title Showdown Set for Saturday as Princeton Hosts Harvard
April 18, 2018 | Women's Tennis
The Ivy League's Richard and Cheryl Gouse Trophy will be presented Saturday at the Lenz Tennis Center. The only question is whether it'll be Harvard or Princeton hands accepting it.
Both teams are 5-0 in the Ivy League, and with every other team in the Ivy no better than 3-2, it'll be Princeton, Harvard, or both winning the Ivy title. The winner of Saturday's match will also be the Ivy's NCAA tournament representative, regardless of Sunday's outcomes, since Saturday's winner will have the head-to-head tiebreaker. The title would be shared if Saturday's winner loses Sunday and Saturday's losing team wins Sunday, as both would be 6-1.
Princeton is ranked 45th as a team by the ITA, and each of Princeton's opponents brings an ITA-ranked singles player into the weekend in Harvard's 105th-ranked Erica Oosterhout and Dartmouth's 114th-ranked Kristina Mathis.
Saturday's match is set for a 1 p.m. start at Lenz, or in Jadwin in the event of inclement weather. Admission is free, and the team will have Twitter updates @PrincetonTennis.
The Tigers will play Dartmouth Sunday, also at 1 p.m. Harvard will be at Penn Sunday at 1 p.m. Princeton defeated both Harvard and Dartmouth this year in Jadwin on the way to the program's first ECAC title but lost to both on the road last season.
The weekend will also mark the final regular-season home matches for the Tiger senior class of Sara Goodwin and Katrine Steffensen. The class has been part of two Ivy League titles, in 2015 and 2016. A title this weekend would be Princeton's 14th and fifth in the last four years. Dartmouth, Cornell and Harvard shared the title last year with Dartmouth getting the automatic NCAA bid.
Sophomore Gaby Pollner has a team-high 14 dual-match singles wins, including 13 at fifth singles, and Goodwin and rookie Nathalie Rodilosso are a team-best 14-3 in doubles, at third.
