Tigers Rally To Force Fifth, But Harvard Holds On For 3-2 Win

Sophomore Greg Luck recorded 15 kills and 16 digs during a gutsy road showing for the Princeton men's volleyball team Friday night in Harvard, but it was one that fell just short of the goal. The Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but the host Crimson held on in the final moments for a 15-13 win to keep its hopes alive to host the EIVA playoffs.

The loss sends Princeton to 5-6 in EIVA play, one match ahead of travel partner NJIT, a 3-2 winner at Sacred Heart. Those teams will switch spots Saturday as they battle for the final postseason spot in the league, with Princeton set to face Sacred Heart Saturday at 5 pm. Princeton does hold the tiebreaker over NJIT after recording a season sweep over the Highlanders.

Luck matched classmate Parker Dixon with 15 kills apiece, and both hit over .300 for the Tigers, while both George Huhmann and Junior Oboh had 10 kills apiece. Huhmann added 10 digs and six blocks for the Tigers, while freshman setter Joe Kelly paced the Tigers with 35 assists. Head coach Sam Shweisky was also able to see fellow freshman setter Niko Gjaja, who was hampered with early-season injuries, get quality time in an important match. Gjaja had 11 assists and three blocks for Princeton, which hit .250 for the match and held Harvard to a .237 percentage.

Should Princeton make the EIVA playoffs, the Tigers will know they are right there will all three opponents. George Mason, which moved to 11-0 with a 3-0 win over Saint Francis, held off the Tigers last weekend for a 3-2 win, just as Harvard did Friday night. Penn State, who will host Princeton next weekend, fell 3-2 to the Tigers in Dillon Gym earlier this season.
