NORFOLK, Va. – A five-run second inning proved to be enough as the Old Dominion Monarchs defeated the Princeton baseball team, 10-4 at Metheny Baseball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshmen Jesper Horsted had three hits at the top of the lineup and scored a run. Junior shortstop Cody Phillips had two knocks. Freshmen Trey Ramsey and sophomore Ben Gross combined to throw three scoreless innings in the loss.
The Monarchs' big second inning began with two outs. Four straight hits tallied runs for Old Dominion, highlighted by a Nick Walker two-run single. The home team put the game away, scoring two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Walker continued his stellar performance with a two-out three-run double in the fifth frame.
Princeton put together its own big scoring inning in the top of the sixth. Five consecutive Tigers reached base, leading to two runs. A RBI groundout from junior Nick Hernandez and wild pitch added two more to the run total. Princeton was held off the scoreboard the rest of the contest.
The Tigers' road trip continues with a four-game wraparound series vs. Georgetown. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 3 p.m. Junior Keelan Smithers gets the ball for the TIgers in the series opener.
