Harvard Tops Princeton For Compton Cup During Tight Racing On Lake Carnegie
April 15, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
Fifth-ranked Harvard ended a two-year Compton Cup run for the fourth-ranked Princeton heavyweights to complete a morning of tight racing on Lake Carnegie. The Crimson won all five races during the regatta, though none of the five would be decided by more than four seconds.
The Crimson won its 63rd Compton Cup with an impressive performance on Lake Carnegie, breaking out early for a lead and never letting Princeton get back to level. The Tigers made runs in both the middle and late portions of the race, but the Crimson fended off both and used a late sprint to build a four-second margin at the finish line. Harvard took the win in 5:30.1, while Princeton suffered its first loss of the season in 5:34.1.
The closest race of the morning would come in the 2V, which was the only race that Harvard won in this same regatta last year. The Crimson 2V is the reigning Sprint and IRA champion, but Princeton pushed hard at Harvard over the final 500 and nearly pulled it out. The Crimson did end up taking the win by a mere .3 of a second in 5:31.0.
Harvard also handed the Tigers their first 3V loss since 2015 with a 3.3-second win, while both the 4V and 5V races also went to the Crimson.
Princeton will face another Top-5 challenge next weekend, as the Tigers will host both No. 3 Yale and No. 14 Cornell in the Carnegie Cup showdown.
