#4 Yale Retains Carnegie Cup Over #5 Tiger Heavyweights
April 22, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
The fourth-ranked Yale heavyweight V8 retained the Carnegie Cup with an impressive performance Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie. The Bulldogs held a lead throughout the 2000 meters and pulled away late for a 6.8-second win over the fifth-ranked Tigers.
The win closed a strong morning for the Bulldogs, who also captured wins in the 2V and 3V races, while Princeton opened the morning with a 4V win.
Yale, the two-time defending Ivy League/Eastern Sprints champion, won the Carnegie Cup for the fourth straight year, matching its longest winning streak (1923-26) since the series started in 1911. Princeton holds the overall lead with 37 wins, while Cornell has 34 and Yale has 25.
Following the 4V win, when Princeton (6:05.9) topper runner-up Cornell by 5.3 seconds, the rest of the morning saw Tiger boats fall behind and never make up the deficit against the strong Bulldog squad. Each Princeton boat kept contact for the majority of the race, but the second half of each race was an uphill battle for the Tigers.
Yale's Ivy champion 1V was able to end Princeton's hopes of reclaiming the Carnegie Cup around the 1500-meter mark, when it made a big push and turned a multi-seat lead into an open water win.
The Tigers will conclude their 2017 regular season next Saturday morning when they host No. 9 Brown for the Content Cup.
