Heavyweight Seniors Become First Class To Win Four Content Cups
April 29, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton heavyweights accomplished two goals Saturday morning. They sent their senior class out with a historic fourth Content Cup victory, and they made sure they brought some momentum into the 2017 Eastern Sprints, which will be held in two weeks on Lake Quinsigamond.
The fifth-ranked Tiger varsity eight had to earn it Saturday morning, as the 12th-ranked Brown Bears refused to let Princeton walk away with a comfortable win. The Tigers were able to gain an advantage over the first half of the race, and then they fended off any Brown challenge over the final 500 to claim the win.
Upperclass members of the Princeton boat didn't need a reminder of what could happen late in these Princeton-Brown races. Besides some exciting postseason showdowns recently, the 2015 Princeton heavyweights made up about a length over the final 500 to win its second of what is now four straight Cup wins.
Princeton has now tied the series lead at 12-12 with Brown.
Princeton won each of the top four races on the morning, including a win of nearly 10 seconds by the second varsity. Both the 3V and 4V had closer margins, but both earned impressive wins over an always-strong Brown team.
It was a good morning for Princeton, which had dropped Top-5 showdowns to both Harvard and Yale over the previous two weeks. The Tigers will now turn their attention back to both programs, as well as the rest of a loaded Eastern field, when they prepare for the Eastern Sprints May 14 at Lake Quinsigamond. The Tigers have won back-to-back Rowe Cup (team points) titles, and their 1V has medalled three straight times, though they are seeking their first gold since 2006.
