Ibrahim Tops Reigning National Champion In 5-Game Thriller; Columbia Takes Team Win, Ivy Title
February 09, 2018 | Men's Squash
The second-ranked Columbia men's squash team took care of business and clinched at least a share of its first Ivy League title during Senior Day in New York City, but the highlight match of the night — and perhaps the college squash regular season — went the way of the seventh-ranked Princeton Tigers.
Freshman Youssef Ibrahim defeated reigning CSA national champion Osama Khalifa in a five-game thriller at the #1 spot to finish off an 8-1 win for the Lions. Ibrahim dropped the first game for the fourth straight match, but he rallied for his third win of that stretch — and his team-best 11th of the season — in a wild 6-11, 11-7, 12-14, 11-8, 11-7 victory over the Columbia senior. It was only Khalifa's third Ivy League loss of his esteemed career — the first one came at the hands of Princeton assistant coach Tyler Osborne during the 2014-15 season.
The depth of the Lions was too much for Princeton, though there were several tight matches during the evening. Junior Clark Doyle built a 2-1 lead at #4, but a 12-10 loss in the fourth led the way to a five-game defeat at the hands of Carter Robitaille. Sophomore Shehab Thabet battled back from injury to make his season debut at #9 and pushed Mac Awalt to five games before ultimately falling 11-5 in the fifth.
Princeton will return to Jadwin Sunday afternoon at 2:30 to take on Cornell in the Ivy League finale. It will be Senior Day for the Tigers, who will recognize co-captains Abhimanyu Shah and Komron Shayegan before the match.
