The Princeton men's lacrosse team will start the second half of the Ivy League season Saturday at home against Dartmouth. The Tigers have three league games to go, and all three will be essential for trying to get into the Ivy tournament.
Before Princeton can worry about that, though, there's the last non-league game of the year, against a first-time opponent who can relate to frustrations to date within the league.
Princeton vs. Siena
Five Storylines
Nice to meet you
Princeton and Siena have never met. The Saints will be the second MAAC team Princeton plays this year (Monmouth on opening day) and the fourth different MAAC team Princeton will play in the last two years (Quinnipiac/Marist in 2017).
Princeton is 11-0 all-time against MAAC teams, though the closest was earlier this year, when the Tigers went to overtime to beat Monmouth 9-8. After the game against Siena, Princeton will have played every MAAC team at least once except for Detroit Mercy.
Close calls
Princeton and Siena have played seven league games between them, and of those seven, three have been one-goal losses. Siena is 0-4 in the MAAC, with one-goal losses to both Quinnipiac (who is unbeaten) and Canisius (who has one loss).
Princeton's most recent Ivy game was a 14-13 loss to Brown on a goal with 14.3 seconds remaining.
More Sowers
Michael Sowers tied his career high with nine points in the win over Stony Brook last Saturday. It was the fourth time in 24 games that Sowers has had nine points in a game; every other Princeton player combined has done it 17 times in 1,180 games.
Sowers is also the first Princeton player with four games of at least nine points. Jesse Hubbard and Mike MacDonald had three each.
Though he is a still a sophomore, Sowers would become the 13th player in program history with at least 60 career goals and 60 career assists if he gets one more goal. He is already 10th all-time in assists at Princeton with 77 assists, and his 136 points make him 22nd all-time at Princeton.
Sowers is also ninth among current Division I players in career assists, trailing seven seniors and Loyola junior Pat Spencer.
Sowers currently leads Division I in assists per game and is third in Division I in points per game.
Freshman update
Chris Brown ranks second on the team in assists (12) and third in points (26). He is also the only player besides Michael Sowers who is in double figures in goals and assists.
Princeton has gotten huge contributions from its freshman class. Andrew Song, the longstick midfielder, leads the team in caused turnovers (11) and is second in ground balls (36), and he's also the only Princeton longstick who has scored this year (he has two goals). George Baughan has started the last five games on defense and is tied for second on the team in caused turnovers.
Luke Crimmins did not play much in the first seven games, but he now has three goals in the last two, with his first in the Brown game and then two more against Stony Brook.
Closing in on 100
Princeton seniors Austin Sims and Riley Thompson are closing in on the 100-point marks for their career.
Thompson enters the game against Siena with 92 career points (72G, 20A). Thompson is two points behind, at 90, with 42 career goals and 48 career assists.
Michael Sowers went over the 100 point mark for his career earlier this season, becoming the 34th player in program history to do so.
