Senior tri-captains Zach Buerger and Ben Schafer have played integral roles in leading the Princeton men's swimming and diving team throughout the year, as the Tigers focused their attention on hosting the Ivy League Championships. During the first full day of competition, that duo were leaders in the water, as both posted top-5 finishes to cap an exciting Thursday of action.
Princeton closed the day securely in second place at the Ivy League Championships with 459 points, more than 80 ahead of second-place Yale (377). Reigning Ivy League champion Harvard leads the field with 563 points with 14 events remaining.
The top swim of the day belonged to Buerger, who earned second-team All-Ivy League honors by finishing second in the 200 IM in 1:44.77. Penn's Mark Andrew, a 2017 All-American and the reigning Ivy champ in the 200 IM, won the event in a meet-record 1:43.24, but Buerger used a dominant split in the back to push past the rest of the field to finish second.
It was the first individual All-Ivy League honor for Buerger, and the time moved to #2 on the all-time Princeton ranking in the event, trailing only Teo D'Alessandro '16 (1:44.33).
Schafer took fifth in the 50 free in 19.82, which matches Michael Carter '09 for the eighth-fastest time in Princeton history. That time would have bumped classmate Alexander Lewis out of the Top 10, but Lewis made a jump in prelims (19.93), which now stands as the 10th-fastest in history. Lewis made the A final in the 50 and finished eighth.
The night started with the 500 free, and sophomore Murphy McQuet took sixth overall in 4:21.29. His prelim time of 4:19.74 is now the fourth-fastest in Princeton history. Freshman Levy Nathan cut more than 2.5 seconds off his prelim time to take 10th in the event.
Another freshman who had a memorable Ivy League Championships debut is diver Colton Young, who posted the top prelim score of 314.20, and followed that up with a top-five finish in the A final (336.95). Sophomore teammate Charlie Minns was just behind Young, taking sixth with 311.25 points.
Lewis, Schafer, McQuet and junior Cole Buese closed the night with an All-Ivy League performance in the 200 free relay. The quartet finished second to Harvard with a time of 1:18.43, which was less than a quarter second faster than third-place Yale.
Friday's preliminary session will begin at 11 am, and finals will start at 6 pm. Adults can purchase all-session tickets for $30. For single-session passes, all finals are $6 for adults, $3 for youth and Ivy students. For the prelim sessions, tickets are $4 for adults and $1 for youth and Ivy students.
