CANTON, N.Y. - Princeton's offense continued to sputter as St. Lawrence took a 5-1 men's hockey victory Saturday night at Appleton Arena. The Tigers have scored two or fewer goals in six consecutive games and eight of their last nine contests.
The Saints held a 3-0 third-period lead before David Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.) scored his first goal of the season when he stuffed in his own rebound at the 13:24 mark. Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer (Manlius, N.Y.) and Josh Roberts (Orleans, Mass.) picked up the assists on Del Monte's goal. With the score 3-1, the Tigers put pressure an St. Lawrence goalie Kevin Ackley, but couldn't put another shot past the freshman.
Robin Carruthers gave St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead with slightly more than six minutes gone in the first period when his shot through traffic eluded Princeton goalie Dave Stathos (Longueuil, Que.). Six minutes later Blair Clarance scored his first of two goals when he tipped in Jeremy Cormier's shot from the right point. The lead grew to 3-0 when Andy Marchetti put a rebound past Stathos at 1:21 of the second period. Del Monte's goal gave Princeton short-lived optimism with slightly more than six minutes remaining in the third, but Clarance scored his second of the game when he beat Stathos through the pads. Rich Peverley then turned an end-to-end rush into a 5-1 St. Lawrence victory.
For the third time this year and the seventh consecutive game in which he has played, Stathos was forced to make more than 30 saves, as he turned aside 38 St. Lawrence shots.
Ackley turned in a superb effort, stopping 35 shots, including 14 in the third period.
Princeton, which was 0 for 8 on the power play, drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the ECAC. St. Lawrence, which failed to convert any of its seven power-play opportunities, is 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Tigers will open their home schedule next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink on Saturday, Nov. 17 against Vermont (7 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 18 versus Dartmouth (3 p.m.). The annual "Skate with the Tigers" event will follow the game against the Big Green.
