PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Susan Hobson (Missassauga, Ont.) knocked home the game-winner at 2:31 of the overtime period to lift the women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Connecticut on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first period in which the Tigers held a 10-5 shot advantage.
The momentum shifted in the second as the Huskies held a 5-2 shot advantage through the early part of the period and finally broke the deadlock at 9:13 with a goal from Tiffany Owens (Belleville, Mich.). Shannon Connolly (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Caitlin Salazar-Reid (London, Ont.) assisted on the goal.
The Orange and Black tied the game at 15:04 of the second when sophomore Gretchen Anderson (Natick, Mass.) was the beneficiary of a Connecticut turnover deep within its own zone. Anderson collected the puck and fired a shot from just inside the right circle that found of the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The score would not remain tied for long. Kimberly Berry (Haverhill, Mass.) scored at 17:32 of the second period off of assists from Owens and Connolly to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
Senior co-captain Wanda Mason (Lewiston, Maine) scored her first goal of the season, and the second of her career, at 3:40 of the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Mason's shot from just outside the left circle was tipped by a Connecticut defender and Huskies netminder Shannon Murphy (Burrillville, R.I.) could not react in time. Sophomore Lisa Rasmussen (Washington, D.C.) and senior co-captain Aviva Grumet-Morris (Evanston, Ill.) each assisted on the score.
The game remained knotted at 2-2 until the 2:31 mark of the overtime period when Hobson collected the puck from junior Nikola Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Anderson and fired it past the Murphy to get the Tigers back to the .500 mark on the season with a 3-2 win.
Sophomore Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, Minn.) made 21 saves to pick up the win and move to 2-1 on the season. Murphy finished with 23 saves in the loss.
Princeton (3-3-2, 1-2-0 ECAC-N) will hit the road next weekend when it travels to Colgate and Cornell. The Tigers will face the Raiders on Friday, Nov. 30 and the Big Red on Saturday, Dec. 1. The games are scheduled for 7 and 4 p.m.
