PROVIDENCE, RI - The Princeton men's hockey team could not carry over the momentum gained in Friday night's 2-1 win over league-leading Harvard as it dropped a 3-1 decision to Brown on Saturday night in Eastern College Athletic Association action at Meehan Auditorium.
For the second night in a row Princeton's opponent more than doubled the Tigers' shot output in the opening period as the Bears held a 16-6 edge. A Dan Hursh (So., Calgary, ALB) rush from the left wing created the best offensive opportunity for the Tigers, but that was cancelled when the net was knocked off and play was stopped.
The Bears quickly came back the other way and took a 1-0 lead at 10:21 of the period. Chris Dirkes (Sr., Marblehead, MA) sent the puck from center ice across the blueline into the Tigers end of the ice and a waiting Chris Swon (Fr., Mendham, NJ). Swon sent the puck across the ice to Chris Legg (Jr., London, ONT) who was on the right side of the crease. Legg collected the puck as Swon went flying across the front of the net and Legg parked it in the back of the net for 1-0 Brown lead. Brown almost made it 2-0 just 20 seconds later when a rebound just sat in the crease but Luc Paquin (Fr., Le Gardeur, QUE) was able to come in and knock it out before the Bears could get a stick on it.
Stathos finished with 15 saves to keep the score at 1-0 going into the first intermission.
Keith Kirley (Jr., Leverett, MA) gave Brown a two-goal cushion at 4:06 of the second stanza. Tye Korbel (Jr., Gofftown, NH) had the puck at the point and sent it down into the corner. Legg threaded a pass from behind the net to a wide open Kirley who was waiting in front of the net to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
Princeton's best offensive opportunity of the period came with about 35 second left when Steve Slaton (So., Plymouth, MN) sent the puck from the blueline down to Brad Parsons (Sr., Kingston, MA) at the edge of the right circle. Parsons had a slim opening, but missed wide right and Brown was able to maintain the 2-0 lead into the third period.
Princeton finally got on the board when Chris Owen (So., Westwood, MA) was able to wrap around the goal and tuck the puck inside the post at 9:45 of the third period for his second goal of the season. Hursh assisted on the score.
The Tigers pulled Stathos in favor of an extra attacker with one minute remaining but could not capitalize as Brown added an empty-net goal with one second remaining to clinch the 3-1 victory. Kirley scored the empty-netter off of assists from Brent Robinson (So., Pointe Claire, QUE.) and Paul Esdale (Jr., Edmonton, ALB).
Stathos closed out the game with 34 saves while Brown netminder Yann Danis (So., Lafontaine, QUE.) finished with 20.
The Tigers split last year's series against Brown, dropping the first game at Hobey Baker Rink, 5-3 and picking up a 4-1 win in Providence in the last weekend of the regular season. The Bears lead the all-time series 70-50-4.
Princeton is will take a break for exams before returning to the ice to host St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday, Feb.1 and Saturday, Feb. 2. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
