Providence, R.I. - The Princeton water polo team opened its quest for an Eastern Championships title with an 8-5 win over Brown. With the win, the Tigers advanced to the semifinals where they met Queens College. The Tigers forced the match into overtime, but Queens pulled ahead with 45 seconds left in the second OT period to win 9-8.
"The guys played great, it was a solid team effort and I'm proud of the team," said head coach Luis Nicolao. "We had our chances but missed some opportunities." Princeton could not convert on three man-up situations in overtime.
At one point Princeton was up 6-4 but Queens evened the score. The Teams exchanged leads until Princeton tied the score at 7-7 with 18 seconds remaining in regulation time. Each team scored one goal in the first overtime period; Queens scored in the second OT period to win 9-8 on a man-up.
Kevin Foster scored two goals. Robert Urquhart, Dan Holligan, Mike Murray, John Stover, and Dan McKenna each tallied on goal in the loss. Peter Sabbatini tallied 12 saves in the loss.
Earlier in the day, Princeton opened a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 4-1 advantage into halftime against the Bears of Brown. Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter to make the score 6-3 and two more in the fourth as the Tigers claimed an 8-5 victory. Urquhart had three goals in the win to led Princeton. Foster and Holligan each had two goals; Stover tallied one. Sabbatini recorded six saves in the win.
Princeton will compete in the third place match to be held tomorrow.
