HAMILTON, N.Y. - Princeton took a 3-1 lead into the third period but could not hold on as it skated to a 3-3 tie with Colgate in men's hockey action on Saturday night at Starr Rink. Princeton was looking for its first outright season sweep of the Raiders since 1996-97, but has to settle for a 1-0-1 mark in this year's series.
Princeton needed an early spark on Saturday night and they got just that when captain David Schneider (Sr., Melrose Park, IL) put the Tigers on the board when he fired a shot from the point and beat Colgate netminder David Cann high and to the glove side for a power play goal at 13:10 of the first period. The goal was Schnieder's third of the season and 17th of his career, which gives him sole possession of second place in career goals scored by a Princeton defenseman.
Schneider's goal, assisted by Brad Parsons (Sr., Kingston, MA) and David Del Monte (Sr., Mississauga, ONT), was scored 1:08 into Princeton's second power play opportunity of the night and broke an 0-for-18 drought while skating with a man advantage. The Tigers had not scored a power play goal since Brad Parsons connected on Princeton's first power play opportunity of the game in the 2-1 loss at Bowling Green on January 5. Princeton took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission but that did not last long as Colgate got on the board 43 seconds into the second period. The play started when the Raiders Joey Mormina took a shot from the left circle. Princeton goalie Dave Stathos (Sr., Longueuil, QUE) made the save but the rebound went to Dmitry Yashin. Yashin's shot was again blocked by Stathos but the puck trickled towards the right post and P.J. Yedon was able to get there first and poke it into the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Colgate had a chance to made it 2-1 4:00 into the period but Stathos stuffed Bob Vandersluis on a breakaway to keep the game tied.
Parsons registered Princeton's second power play goal of the game at 9:28 of the second period while the Tigers were skating with a 5-on-3 advantage. Del Monte sent the puck across the width of the blueline to Schneider, who then sent the puck down to Parsons down low at the edge of the right circle for a 2-1 Princeton lead.
Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer (So., Manlius, NY) gave Princeton a 3-1 lead at 16:26 of the second period. Jesse Masear (High River, ALB) fed Fouladgar-Mercer who was skating up the left side of the ice. Cann saved Fouladgar-Mercer's initial shot, but he collected his own rebound found the back of the net to put Princeton ahead 3-1 going into the second intermission.
Colgate cut into the Princeton lead at 9:09 of the final period. Brad D'Arco collected the puck right in front of the goal off of a rebound from a Dave Thomas shot and parked the puck in the back of the net. Yedon also assisted on the goal
Princeton had a great opportunity to take a 4-2 lead when George Parros (Jr., Randolph, NJ) brought the puck up on a breakaway but Cann made a great save on the initial shot. The rebound bounced right to a trailing James Fitzpatrick (Fr., Lawrenceville, NJ) who was looking at a wide open left half of the net but Cann managed to get back in position enough to get a pad on it and keep the score 3-2.
Colgate came back to the other end of the ice and tied the score at 16:25. Yedon Yashin brought the puck behind the net and fed Yedon in front to send the game into overtime. D'Arco also assisted on the goal.
Princeton is now 4-0-1 in games when it takes a lead into the final period.
Stathos finished with 30 saves, while Cann had 34
Princeton will play four out of its last six games at home. The Tigers host Rensselaer on Friday, Feb. 15 and Union on Saturday, Feb. 16 before traveling to Dartmouth and Vermont on Feb 22-23. Princeton will close out the regular season by hosting Harvard and Brown on March 1-2. All games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
