Water Polo Opens North/South Invite with 11-10 Victory over Iona

Princeton, N.J. - Dan McKenna scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third overtime period as the Tigers defeated Iona 11-10 to open the North/South Invitational. Nearly 1000 spectators came to the Tigers second game of the day where Princeton defeated Harvard 8-2 on a strong team defensive effort. Princeton is hosting the invitational that features eight teams from the east and will conclude on Sunday, September 29.
Robert Urquhart scored four goals in the match against Iona, including one in the first overtime period. Kevin Foster and John Stover each had two and Derrick Wong one goal in the victory.
Nearly 1,000 spectators packed DeNunzio Pool as Princeton dominated the second game of day, defeating the Crimson 8-2. The Tigers opened 3-0 lead at the end of first quarter and entered halftime up 5-1. Freshman John Stover led the Tigers with three goals. Foster, Urquhart, McKenna, Dan Holligan, and DJ Halliday each tallied one goal. Goalie, Peter Sabbatini made 11 saves as the Tiger defense only allowed two Crimson goals, one per half.
"This is one of the most solid team defensive efforts that I have seen here," said head coach Luis Nicolao. "The team pulled together, held Harvard to two goals; it was a pleasure to watch."
The Tigers will face Brown at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
