Boston, Mass. - The Princeton men's hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision Saturday night to Northeastern at Matthews Arena. Northeastern went ahead 1-0 in a see-saw first period and never looked back to earn its second win of the season. The loss dropped Princeton to 4-9-0 on the season.
The two teams played a wide-open first period with good scoring chances coming on both ends of the ice. Princeton outshot Northeastern 14-11, but it was the Huskies that put the first goal on the scoreboard. The Northeastern goal came on the power play. Jon Awe sent a pass towards the crease that found its way through legs as it went to the net. Just before Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux was able to cover it up, Eric Ortlip skated in and slid it into the net. Jason Guerriero also assisted on the goal. Princeton began the second period strong and almost evened the score in the first minute but could not crack Northeastern goaltender Keni Gibson. Momentum slowly swung into Northeastern's favor and the Huskies added two goals to make their lead 3-0 by the end of the period.
Midway through the period, Northeastern made it 2-0 when the Huskies took advantage of a Princeton turnover and established possession in the Tiger end of the ice. The Huskies quickly moved the puck to take advantage of the transition play and Steve Sanders scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play that was set up by Guerriero and Mike Morris.
Northeastern's second goal of the period came after Tim Judy blocked a point shot from Princeton defenseman Matt Maglione. Judy then passed the puck to Jared Mudryk who was hanging around the center ice face-off circle and he went in on a breakaway and scored with a shot to the upper right corner.
Northeastern added a fourth goal at 4:32 of the third period on the power play. Ortlip collected a rebound on the doorstep and put it into the open net. Northeastern outchanced the Tigers 10-3 in the period.
Leroux made 32 saves and fell to 4-9-0 on the season, while Gibson earned his second win of the season and made 28 saves.
Princeton returns to action on Tuesday night when Harvard visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m. The Tigers will be looking to complete the series sweep as they bested the Crimson 4-2 in Cambridge earlier this season.
