PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton will host the collegiate men's squash championships this weekend, where it will attempt to win its first national championship since the 1992-93 season. It would also complete a dream season for the current squad, which has already taken both the National Five-Man championship and the Ivy League title, its third in four years.
The Tigers enter the competition as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Pennsylvania Friday at 4:30 at Jadwin Squash Courts. Princeton defeated Pennsylvania 9-0 earlier in the season, taking the first eight matches at 3-0 apiece. The other first-round match played at Princeton tomorrow will be between No. 1 Trinity and No. 8 Dartmouth. Trinity, the only team to top Princeton this year, has won three straight national titles.
The first day of competition will also have matches taking place at the University of Pennsylvania. Among them will be the two other quarterfinals for the main draw, as No. 4 Harvard will take on No. 5 Western Ontario, and No. 3 Yale will take on No. 6 Cornell. If form holds, Princeton will play Yale in a rematch of its most exciting match of the year. The semifinal, which will be played at Jadwin on Saturday at 12:30, would pit the top two teams in the Ivy League. Princeton defeated Yale 5-4 in New Haven, Conn., earlier in the year. Princeton won matches 2-5, while Yale took matches 6-9, leaving all eyes on the freshman battle at No. 1. Yale' Julian Illingworth, considered one of the top American squash players ever, held a 2-0 lead and match ball on Princeton's Yasser El-Halaby before the Tiger freshman battled back for the eventual 3-2 win.
Trinity has played Harvard once this year, topping the Crimson 8-1.
The final will be played Sunday at noon at Jadwin Gym. Last season, Trinity topped Princeton 8-1 in the national final.
