HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Will Evans rallied from 2-1 down in his first match against Breck Bailey and 1-0 down in his second match to advance to the quarterfinals of the CSA intercollegiate singles championship. Evans, the third seed, joins No. 1 Yasser El-Halaby and No. 7 David Yik in the quarterfinals. On the women's side, No. 5 Ruchika Kumar won six of seven games to advance to the quarterfinals of he women's tournament.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday at Trinity College. El-Halaby will open against No. 9 Richard Repetto, who upset No. 8 Matt Serediak of Cornell. If El-Halaby wins, he would either play No. 4 Julian Illingworth, who he has beaten twice in the last month, or Trinity's No. 2 player, Michael Ferreira. On the bottom half of the draw, Evans will play No. 11 Nick Kyme, the No. 3 player from Trinity who defeated No. 6 Will Broadbent in the second round. A win for Evans would either set up a rematch of last year's national final against Trinity's No. 1 player, Barnardo Samper, or an all-Princeton match against classmate Yik. Samper defeated Evans 3-1 in the finals last year.
The Yik-Samper quarterfinal pits the last two intercollegiate champions against each other, as Yik preceded Samper's 2002 title with a championship run of his own in 2001.
Kumar, the No. 5 seed in the Gail Ramsay Cup, named after the Princeton women's squash coach, will play No. 4 Michelle Quibell of Yale tomorrow afternoon. Quibell rallied from 2-0 down to defeat Kumar 3-2 in the Howe Cup quarterfinals.
Frances Comey, Frances McKay and Anne Werner each lost in their opening-round matches of the Ramsay Cup. Each fell 3-0 to women ranked among the top six in the field.
Princeton's other two representatives at Trinity College, Dent Wilkens and Nathan Beck, both won their matches in the 'B' division and will play in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Beck had one of the most exciting days of the tournament, winning both matches in five games.
