PRINCETON, N.J. -Cameron Atkinson (football/track & field), Greg Parker (wrestling) and David Yik (squash) are the 2003 recipients of the William Winston Roper Trophy.
The Roper Trophy was originally given by Mrs. William Winston Roper and the Class of 1902 in honor of Princeton's famed football coach. It goes annually to "a Princeton senior of high scholastic rank and outstanding qualities of sportsmanship and general proficiency in athletics."
Atkinson, a senior chemistry major from Mantua, N.J., ended his career third on the all-time rushing list at Princeton with 2,449 yards, including a 1,000-yards season during his senior campaign. A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection this past season, Atkinson was also one of three Division I-AA winners of the National Football Foundation scholar-athlete postgraduate scholarship. A two-time Academic All-America selection, Atkinson didn't let up when football season ended. He was a two time Heptagonal champion in track and a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection in the sport. He won three team awards during his career, including the Poe-Kazmaier Award in football for team MVP, and the Babb Trophy in track for rookie of the year. Parker, a computer science major from Clifton Park, N.Y., is the all-time wins leader at Princeton and a two-time EIWA champion. After reaching the NCAA tournament as a sophomore, Parker burst on to the scene as a junior when he topped the No. 1 seed in the middle of a run that took him to the NCAA championship match at 174 pounds. Parker fell in that match, but claimed All-America honors, a feat he would repeat during the 2003 championships. The 2003 EIWA Most Outstanding Wrestler, Parker is a two-time honoree for All-Academic honors, including a spot on the first team in 2002. He was also a first-team Academic All-District selection in 2003.
Yik, a senior English major from North Vancouver, B.C., won the 2001 national individual championship and is a four-time member of the All-America first team. The 2001 Ivy League Player of the Year, Yik earned first-team All-Ivy honors in each of his four years at Princeton, including three seasons in which he led Princeton to Ivy League championships. A three-time captain and two-time National Scholar Athlete, Yik was the 2003 Skillman Award winner as the top sportsman in all of men's college squash. He led Princeton to the team finals in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
