Princeton Squash Newsletter January 28, 2004
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
Happy 2004! On behalf of all of us at Princeton Squash, I wish you and your family a healthy and happy New Year!
It has been a long time since I have written, so I have lots to tell you about Princeton Squash!
Last Saturday, examinations finally came to an end, and I know I heard a collective sigh of relief coming from every corner of the campus! The students, who slept very little over the past few weeks, are "working hard" on catching up on their sleep, and working even harder at preparing for the upcoming intercollegiate squash season! After a seven week break from competition, the squash team is looking forward to getting back into action, and the next six weeks will certainly be a whirlwind of excitement!
Last Sunday, a mere 24 hours after exams ended, I took the team into NYC to play a match with an all-star team of Princeton alumni and NYC players at the beautiful University Club. Jeff Stanley '88, Chuck Goodwin '93, and Alec Decker '98 organized a fabulous afternoon of squash and good cheer. We played 12 singles matches and even a little doubles! It was a great opportunity to see old friends and play some good squash! Thanks to the alumni who came out to cheer us on and "take us on": Rowan Carroll '82, Joe Lubin '87, Jack Hellmann '92, Ben Fishman '98, and Chris Laporte '99. A full report of the match from Alec Decker is available at: http://www.squashtalk.com/collegesquash/news/jan04/news1-06.htm Tonight is a big night for our team as we travel to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania at 6PM! Both our varsity and junior varsity teams will be competing, as well as our women's varsity and junior varsity. It will be a very tough match for us as Penn is very strong. We look forward to a great match, and hopefully I can report good news tomorrow!
This coming Saturday, January 31 we host Yale in our only remaining home match of the season! The Yale-Princeton match has come down to 5-4 for the past seven years, with Princeton winning six of them, and we are anxious to keep the streak alive! Yale is much improved this year and we are working hard to make up for the losses of Will Evans '03, David Yik '03, Dan Rutherford '03, Eric Pearson '03, as well as #6 player Aaron Zimmerman, who is just returning from a season long injury. The Men's varsity and j.v. matches begin at 1:30 pm with the Women's match to follow at 4pm. We need your support, so please mark the date on your calendar and come cheer on the team!
The following weekend, we head north for our showdown with Dartmouth and Harvard. Both matches will be very tough. I hope all of our Hanover and Boston alumni and friends will come out to cheer us on! The Dartmouth match is scheduled for 12:30 pm on Saturday, February 7 in Hanover, while the Harvard match is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, February 8 at the Murr Center in Cambridge. One of the highlights of our trip to New England is certainly the fantastic evening we spend at the Shingleton's home the night before the Harvard match. Brad and Barbara, parents of team members Jen '03 and Becca '06, open their home to both the Men's and Women's teams and their parents for a sumptuous feast. With a pre-match meal like that, it is no wonder that we have done so well at Harvard over the past four years!
After a week home to regroup, we head off to Trinity College for a match with the six time defending National Champions at 1pm on Saturday, February 15. We will spend the night in Hartford and then take on Amherst at 1pm and Williams at 3pm the following day at Trinity.
I will fill you in more about the rest of the season, but in the meantime, keep rubbing that rabbit's foot, and keep sending "good vibes" our way, as we will do our best to represent Princeton in the best light possible!
All the best,
Bob Callahan Princeton Men's Squash Coach
