CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard wrestling team jumped out to a quick start and fought off a Princeton rally to win its first match of the season today at the Murr Center. The Tigers fell to 0-3 in the Ivy League with the 22-10 loss, and Princeton fell to 2-7 overall with a 27-16 loss to East Stroudsburg later in the day.
The match began at 174 pounds, which was a perfect scenario to the previously winless Crimson. Eddie Jones earned a tight 7-5 win over Jack Fleming, giving Harvard a 3-0 lead. Following a 7-3 win by P.J. Jones, Reggie Lee picked up a major decision over Princeton's tough sophomore Jake Butler. It got even sweeter for the Crimson, who lost by criteria to Princeton last season, when Bode Ogunwole scored a later takedown with a minute remaining to earn a win over Joe Looke, who is considered one of the top heavyweights in the league. Kenny Chu (125) got Princeton's first win, and Brian Kirschbaum dominated Greg Cook 13-2 to get Princeton to within 13-7. With the No. 1 wrestler in the country, Harvard's Jesse Jantzen, one match away, the Tigers desperately needed a win by Milo Adams at 141 pounds to have a chance. It wasn't to be, as Max Meltzer scored an 8-4 win to open a 16-7 lead. The match was put to rest a minute later, as Jantzen pinned Matt Piselli in 57 seconds to clinch the match.
Charlie Wiggins and Matt DeNicholo each earned 4-3 wins to close out the match.
Looke did earn a pin against East Stroudsburg, as did Kischbaum. Adams added a major decision.
Princeton will look for its first Ivy League win of the season Saturday when it takes on Brown.
