CANTON, N.Y. - Sophomore Yasser El Halaby won 15 straight games, the last six over the top two players from Harvard, to win the 2004 College Squash Association national singles tournament. This is the second straight title for El Halaby, and it concludes an amazing season that included his history-making performance at the Tournament of Champions in New York City.
El Halaby, who swept teammate Will Evans to win the 2003 title, knocked out upstart Harvard freshman Siddhart Suchde 9-7, 9-3, 9-2 to advance to the finals. In the other semifinal, Crimson sophomore Will Broadbent knocked out No. 2 seed Julian Illingworth in three games. El Halaby entered the match with a perfect record against Broadbent, and he made sure there would be no change to that. El Halaby jumped all over Broadbent early, taking the first game 9-0. The second game was the most competitive of the three, with Broadbent jumping out to a 6-0 lead. El Halaby showed his championship experience, running the table after that to earn the 9-6 win. The Tiger sophomore closed it out with a 9-1 win in the final game. "Yasser was awesome," head coach Bob Callahan said. "They were terrific gentlemen playing today. He is thrilled to be champion again."
A trio of Tiger freshmen won their final matches of the season Sunday, as Genevieve Lessard defeated Penn's Radhika Ahluwalia 9-6, 9-6, 9-4 to win the consolation final and Claire Rein Weston defeated teammate Ali Pearson 9-4, 9-5, 9-5 to win the Ramsay Cup second round consolation final. Brandon Bascom defeated Greg Clement 9-4, 9-4, 10-8 to win Malloy second round consolation final.
